The China Focus editorial team is thrilled to announce the winners of the 2026 China Focus Essay Contest!

Generously supported by the 1990 Institute, The Carter Center, Fudan-UC Center, and the 21CCC, the China Focus Essay Contest highlights emerging voices exploring timely issues related to China and its role in the world. This year, entrants were asked to discuss either how the United States and China can find common ground on critical global issues or how U.S.-China competition is reshaping the Asia-Pacific region. The winning essays were selected by a panel of experts from The Carter Center, the 1990 Institute, the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy faculty, and the China Focus editorial team.

The selected essays will be published by China Focus, The Carter Center, and the 1990 Institute in their respective publications in the coming weeks. Be sure to check back in to read the installments.
